Sony FDR X3000 Review – Overview

The design of the FDR-X3000 is more or less similar to Sony’s prior action cameras, such as the HDR-AS50.

However, rather than making just another rectangular camera like the Go Pro, Sony has designed the FDR-X3000 to resemble a small camcorder.

Sony’s action cameras are renowned for being ergonomic for hand-holding, which is more pertinent than before with the FDR-X3000.

In addition, this camera’s stabilization is so impressive that it allows you to capture footage while walking without any interference.

Like the FDR-X1000V, which precedes it, the FDR-X3000 is available in a sleek white finish.

However, it also weighs about 115 grams, the same as the FDR-X1000V. This is very impressive, considering the level of image stabilization you’re getting.

The camera’s body is IPX4 splash-proof, so if you want to take it underwater, you’ll need to put it inside the included waterproof case.

The case enhances the camera’s underwater resistance up to 60 meters, but it also makes the camera substantially bulkier.

Sony must have listened to people’s complaints about previous cameras because this model has three recording lights, instead of two in prior units.

So, let’s look at the technical specifications of the FDR-X3000 and some of its other outstanding features.

Other Key Features of Sony FDR X3000

Professional 4K quality

With the new Zeiss Tessar lens with significantly less distortion than previous models and the acclaimed BIONZ X processor, the FDR-X3000 features video quality consistent in all settings.

With a full pixel readout, the FDR-X3000 shoots are high resolution, and the colors are accurate in both Full HD and 4K. It also has a built-in stereo mic with noise reduction.

Tough Body

The body of the FDR-X3000 is freeze-proof and splash-proof even without the waterproof housing.

So whether you’re snowboarding, hiking on a rainy day, or capturing dirt bike footage, the FDR-X3000 will hold its ground.

In addition, with the tripod screw mount on the body of the camera itself and the waterproof case, you can easily fasten the FDR-X3000 to a tripod stand.

Underwater Housing as Standard

You do not need to buy additional gear; the included underwater housing allows you to take the FDR-X3000 underwater up to 60 meters.

The underwater housing has convenient camera buttons and a flat port in front of the lens.

The casing enables easy control of all functions. In addition, the housing protects this rugged, compact camera from dampness, dust, rust, sand, and shocks.

You can explore the underwater marine environment and rough terrain with the FDR-X3000.

Remote Camera Control

The included Live-View Remote allows you to control the FDR-X3000 and stream a live preview of the footage you’re capturing.

The remote allows you to control a couple of functions on the camera, such as power on/off, start/stop, shooting settings, etc.

You can also use Sony’s Play Memories app for live previews; it’s available for Android and iOS.

Enhanced Convenience

The FDR-X3000 has built-in Bluetooth, GPS, NFC, and Wi-Fi for instant control, connectivity, and tracking your epic adventures.

You also get a new intuitive interface, adjustable beep volume, and three recording lights, among other things.

The back also features an HDMI port, microphone, and USB for enhanced accessory attachment and ease of connection.

Stereo Sound with Wind Noise Reduction

The FDR-X3000 can improve your footage with superb audio. The built-in microphone enables you to capture sound natively in a two-track stereo.

The camera’s wind noise reduction lessens the impact of wind interference on general audio quality. Crisp sound with reduced noise enhances even the most sophisticated footage you capture.

You also get a microphone jack for when you need an external microphone.

Final Thought

To sum up, Sony does things a bit differently with the FDR-X3000. However, it still has many impressive features, and its waterproof housing allows it to be taken anywhere.

Although its battery life isn’t great and can run down when shooting at higher resolutions, it’s an excellent camera and a viable alternative to GoPros.
